Motsoaledi: lives wasted because of greed!! People in the squatter camps are the alternative

Motsoaledi squatter camp started sometimes 1993.   Just like many other current squatter camps in South Africa. The people were under the impression that “the politicians will build houses as soon as they get into power”. Elias Motsoaledi is one of the ANC popular politicians during the apartheid. It is common to find squatter camps named after a politician despite that “they never set a foot or even aware about them”. The same names have been repeated. Lots of squatter camps are named after Mandela because of his then popularity amongst the masses. Dated 25 August 2005.

VUKA MOTSOALEDI CONCERNED RESIDENTS

Soon is the local government elections. Since the ANC government came into power we’ve only experienced empty promises.  Many people are unemployed and losing their jobs. Those who do work are paid peanuts and their future is uncertain. They only work as casuals on a contract basis, which means at any time you can lose your job without any benefits. Take back your lives, communities and be independent from this mental slavery!
We are the workers and majority; everything from basic to luxury is made, grew, installed, manufactured, maintained, transported and mined by us. Yet we cannot afford these resources and food because we don’t have the money.   Everyone at Motsoaledi is a worker including other similar communities across the country and the whole world. Whether unemployed, pensioner or going to school you are a worker. Continue reading ““Take back your lives, communities …”: Motsoaledi anarchists, February 2006″

Soweto: Direct Action In Motsoaledi/ Vuka Motsoaledi newsletter, October 2008

Found at http://www.anarkismo.net/article/10248

Vuka Motsoaledi was a successor to Motsoaledi News.  No complete copies or hard copies have been located.  It is not known when the paper started or ended, or how many times it appeared. It involve the same basic group of people, and the same basic ideas, as Motsoaledi News i.e.  it was closely linked (like that paper) to the Phambile Motsoaledi Community Project and the Zabalaza Anarchist Communist Federation (later Front; the ZACF) Interestingly however Vuka Motsoaledi is described here as the newsletter of the Motsoaledi Concerned Residents (MCR) structure (see here), indicating the anarchist / ZACF presence remained important 3 years after the MCR launch. The article also announces an MCR meeting on the 12 October 2008.

Vuka Motsoaledi!

Vuka Motsoaledi (VM) has been the newsletter of the community structure Motsoaledi Concerned Residents (MCR). This structure was formed sometimes around 2005 amid overwhelming support from the community. All these came after the present government failed to deliver basic services. “Pre-paid Water Meters: a vicious attack on the poor,” Phillip Nyalungu, ZACF/ Phambile Motsoaledi Community Project , October 2004

This article was circulated on the African Anarchism emailing list on 21 October 2004. It is not clear if it was from Motsoaledi News, but its author was the main writer for that newsletter.  The statement that “If you take a walk behind the Chris Hani hospital (Baragwanath hospital), along its outside wall, you will be shocked to see this big water pipe…” refers to the back area of the Motsoaledi squatter camp, which is next to that hospital.

PRE-PAID WATER METERS – A VICIOUS ATTACK ON THE POOR by Phillip Nyalungu, Black Action Group, ZACF, Motsoaledi, Soweto

Privatization of basic services is a daylight attack on the poor and the black majority of this country. On a daily basis doors are being closed in the faces of the poor.

Motsoaledi News No. 5: Phambili Motsoaledi Community Project/ ZACF, ca. October 2004

This version of Motsoaledi News (number 5, no date stated, but issued around October 2004) , was circulated on the internet.  No hard copy has been located. Earlier issues, for October 2003 (here) and December 2003 (here) were not numbered, so how they fit with “number 5” is not known, nor is frequency known. Notably this newsletter dates the start of the Phambili (Sometimes spelt ‘Phambele’ or ‘Phembile’) Motsoaledi Community Project (PCMP),  linked to the Zabalaza Anarchist Communist Federation (now Front; the ZACF) in “2002 around October.”

WE CAN MAKE CHANGE

We the people of Motsoaledi; for so long we’ve been waiting. While other communities which came after us have electricity, houses and schools. The only thing we know: it’s promise after a promise. “Motsoaledi News”, October 2003 – Phambile Motsoaledi Community Project / ZACF

The Phambile Motsoaledi Community Project was linked closely to Zabalaza Anarchist Communist Federation (now Front) (or ZACF).  The ZACF was a direct successor of the Workers Solidarity Federation: on the ZACF, read here. Besides running a small library and meeting space (a social centre in the Motsoaledi squatter camp in Soweto, behind the giant Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital), the Project also sponsored to start a … Continue reading “Motsoaledi News”, October 2003 – Phambile Motsoaledi Community Project / ZACF
