The prominent anarchist role in the shutdown of the 1999 Seattle (US) World Trade Organisation (WTO) had given the movement a major boost internationally. Meetings like this were key Bikisha activities, sometimes used to mobilise for a visible (if rather modest) anarchist presence in anti-privatisation and anti-war protests in Johannesburg.
